New Pima Police Department celebrates opening

Published on Sunday, October 18, 2009 10:21 AM MST

The Pima Police Department used to share space with District 2 Justice of the Peace. Now it will have a space of its own.

The grand opening of the new Pima Police Department, located behind Pima Town Hall on the north side of Highway 70, was Wednesday.

A Community Development Block Grant for $380,000 went toward constructing the new building. Pima Town Manager Gerald Schmidt said the town saved a lot of money by using inmate labor for the majority of the project.

The Pima Police Department celebrated its grand opening Wednesday. Schmidt said more than $200,000 is left on the grant, much of which will be used toward an addition to the Pima Library.

Inmate labor caused the project to move slower than if professionals had been used for everything, but Schmidt wanted to make sure the money saved could be used for other projects.

After applying for an extension on the grant, Pima should have until June 2010 to use the remainder of the money.

Construction began on the new police department in January, but Schmidt said the plan was in the works since 2006.

The new building is about four times bigger than the old space and totals 1,980 square feet. It includes a reception area with waiting room in front, a meeting room, break room and other offices.

I may not know everything (as some of you seem to), but my experience has been that Chief Cauthen performs her job in a very professional way.

I served a term on the town council and I know it is not easy. Thanks to those who serve today and endure the critics. "

Why did the new guy, (short one about 5'5", syndrome to go with it) leave Surprise PD and come to Pima? Why do we have a town manager that has zero credentials and came to Pima from a ranch, where he was working as a ranch hand? Does that qualify someone to be a town manager?? Is Diane a good example for our youth?? As a taxpayer and citizen of Pima, I would like to have these questions answered for the people!! "

The officers that work special details must do so outside of thier normal work hours. This is true for all other agencies in the valley.
